Here’s an interview with Vance Stevens about Abu Dhabi.
He talks about:
the city
the multicultural population
religion
entertainment
other Emirates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
the postal service
Thanks, Vance, for giving a broader perspective on Abu Dhabi!
Take a tour with Vance:
Take a look at these wonderful photos of Abu Dhabi at Flickr.
Teachers, please, feel free to use this interview with your students.
I've created this
online quiz to go along with the interview. Feel free to use it.
Dear Carla and Vance,
Thank you very much for the wonderful resource of interview about Abu Dhabi. It is very close to my feelings as I have a good friend who lives and works in there.
It’s really an amazing event you managed to run and share with us.
I can’t stop amazing of what you, Carla, doing!
Thanks again.
Love,
Nina
Dear Nina,
Great that you liked. I had a wonderful time, as always, talking to Vance!
Great idea Carla – hope this is one of a series!
Graham,
This has been an idea that I’ve even considered with Cristina to become a Webcast show, something like People, Languages and Places or People and Places. So, you’re in our list now!!!
Dear Carla and Vance,
Really interesting interview. Thanks for sharing with us. I am fascinated by this part of the world. I have seen some documentaries about the UE and your interview added a lot to the information I already had about it.
Hugs from Brazil
José Antônio
Interesting, isn’t José? Vance added A LOT to my knowledge about Abu Dhabi. I wish I could go there some day. Who knows?
Dear Carla:
what a fantastic idea.I’m thinking about a listening activity for my students here in Del Valle.
as you can imagine you and Vance are famous among them, like rock stars!!! I name all of you many times, when they ask me about our blog and the tools I present them to work.
The best player is the podcast player at the bottom of the page.
A hug from del Valle in Argentina
Susana
Dear Susana,
I know what you mean because I always mention the Webheads to my students and family, though they don’t quite get it! They think we’re kind of a “secret society”. It’s quite the opposite, for I love our openness and transparency. Please, let me know how you used in your class. I’m going to prepare something to, and will let you know.
Thanks for being around.
Dear Carla and Vance,
What a great idea to interview a dear colleague about his experiences in such a far and exotic city to us on this side of the globe.
I was not surprised to hear Vance´s neighbor is Venezuelan as 20,000 oil industry employees -many of whom were highly qualified- were fired from the National oil company by the government in 2003. There are now many Venezuelans where oil is found (Alberta, Canada; the US, Mexico, the North Sea, Kuwait and even Abu Dabi). If your neighbor, Vance, worked in PDVSA, he might know Armando Izquierdo, my husband, who held a key position before he was fired.
We always think of the Arab Emirates as areas full of dust and sand, as Carla mentioned, without fully realizing that cities like Abu Dabi have splendid architecture and combine this modern view with their ancient traditions.
Muchas gracias por compartir. I will follow the generous suggestion and use it with my students later on in the term.
Muchos cariños a ambos,
Berta en Caracas
Berta,
And a huge thank you for this extra piece of info about Venezuela and the oil industry. You’re certainly in my list for interviews!
I thought it to be great to talk to Vance and learn more about Abu Dhabi as to demystify some ideas we have about the United Emirates. I guess we should keep exploring other places in the world to better understand other cultures and be more tolerant with differences. At last, the Wecastacademy has been serving a real purpose to me!!!
Let me know what you do in your class.
Hope to meet you soon!
Carla
Hi Vance and Carla
What a nice interview! I loved to learn more about life in Abu Dhabi. In fact, I didn’t know anything about this beautiful place! Vance, it was great to hear your voice. You should record more and more interviews.
hugs
Erika Cruvinel
Vance is great to be interviewed, isn’t he, Erikats?
Dear Carla and Vance,
what a wonderful idea! Thanks for the great interview, I will definitely use it with my students. There’s so much to learn about different cultures and places in the world!!!
Santana? Roger Waters? Wow, I envy you…
Um abraço,
Mônica Veado
Dear Mônica,
It seems that Vance is really having a great time there, isn’t he?
In fact, I read that the government is really investing in entertainment and arts there. They want to be a huge cultural hub, and are planning to build the biggest Guggenheim there.
Let me know what you plan for your class as you’re always so creative.

With the semester almost over, I finally got around to listening to this interview. It was worth the wait! It was so nice to hear your voices sounding like you were right next to me chatting about Abu Dhabi. I also really enjoyed the Flickr photos of some of that awesome modern architecture that looks like birds! It was fun seeing Vance’s apartment and going for a walk along the Corniche. Webheads rule!
